When the Flu Hits a Busy Mom (And Life Doesn't Stop)

influenza (noun)

  1. a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever, severe aching, and catarrh, and often occurring in epidemics:
"influenza can cause severe illness in people of any age"

Boy I never knew what hit me last weekend.  Saturday afternoon I started getting weazy and wore out, headache, dry eyes. I chalked it up to mowing the super dry grass on thru Sunday it went this way. Woke up kinda rough Sunday still went to church and taught Sunday School but that plum wore me out.  Picked up an antihistamine/allergy pill.  After lunch I went straight to bed for 2 hours with freezing feet… but the Birthday Party still happened.

Overnight I went from freezing to sweating and coughing lots of coughing- boom I was not well.  100-degree temp Monday, battled it all day, figured it’s a 24 hour bug that’s about all the worse I’ve been hit with anything for a while.  Chills and sweats all day. Moved all my appointments from Monday to Wednesday and Thursday and took the day of rest.  I managed to put the soup in the crock pot and fold a little laundry. Otherwise it was a Netflix, chill, and nap day for mom and the little guy (lie way too much screen time)

Tuesday was 101!?! Sweat thru my pj’s freezing in my sweatshirt all the grossness.  But it's Tuesday and I have showroom hours so we (me and the little guy…)  load up and spend the day at the showroom.  I shipped some packages, built block towers with my little guy, drank tea, scrolled the internet.  The little guy must not have been feeling 100% either he napped big in the morning and afternoon. What a breeze for me!   The ib profin was helping Tuesday until it was time to go home… Then the fever hit again.  Guys this was awful bad enough!

By Wednesday it was 101 again!  Hubby mentioned a Dr appointment, and I remembered we have HealthTap free with our Christian Healthcare Ministries.  I had an urgent care appointment describing my symptoms to the online Dr.  “You have the flu, you have to wait it out.  Tylenol, IB Profin, Mucinex, and rest.”  Ugh!  I’ve been doing that… ok.  Well at least now I know it must be a thing and that it might be a few more days…  Rescheduling my appointments again moved them clear to next week. Made it to the store for Mucinex, Boiron Oscillococcinum, vitamin C, and some food- because from scratch cooking isn’t happening this week.  I had prepped pizza dough Saturday, so I got some shredded cheese and made the big kids build the pizzas, I also made sure we had sliced bread, fruit, OJ, and cold meat.

Thursday morning NO FEVER!  Not feeling the best but the digital thermometer wasn’t red anymore!  I started some chili in the crock pot. The little guy went to combine with Dad. I had a package to ship at the showroom before going after the raw milk and the little guy.  I made it through the day! More drugged than I prefer to be, but I didn’t nap, I didn't sweat through my clothes, and I didn’t freeze to death.  I may have lived!

Things I learned this week:

  • Sicknesses can last more than a day

  • Keep Boiron Oscillococcinum around.  It's a white and orange box that the whole family can take (2 yr and up) helps with all the flu like symptoms and appears to be natural!

  • Earthly tinctures work best before you are the sickest of sick.  Sometimes you have to go get medications.

  • Electrolytes are helpful!

  • Vitamin C & D

  • Crockpots are your best friend!  It doesn’t matter if it takes you an hour to get the meal started. By the end of the day the soup will still taste better than something from a can ( I probably don’t have any from a can anyways…)

  • Mucinex makes a ton of different formulas

It's Friday. I'm still coughing some, still taking the medications, but I’m feeling better!  Guess this wasn’t the week to get back in the Butcher Shop after all.
