The $10 Dresser I Almost Regretted

Finally got the white dresser finished and brought out of the Butcher Shop!  What took so long you ask… yeah I don’t know.  The Flu, harvest, shorter darker colder days, waiting for someone to help me load it and bring it to the Showroom.  Life really is just a mix of all the fun things being a mom, farm wife, small business owner, and Sunday School teacher.

The Before Picture

If you recall in a previous post I grabbed this dresser for $10 from FB Marketplace and I kind of regretted it.  It was pressed wood, less appealing than the picture made it look, and the drawers didn’t work great.

So I started the project by cleaning it well with warm soapy water.  Glued the rough spots on the drawers and sanded some others.  Wood putty helped in a few rough spots also.  The backing was really hard cardboard, not wood.  So I removed it as there was a lot of damage to it.

Drawer clamped for gluing

Gluing the corners on the dresser helped but didn’t make it look new by any means.

Another drawer glued!

Oh, to be able to work with the overhead door open again. End of November we’re looking for reasons to be grateful however during this cold and rainy week it has me longing for the lovely fall day that I could work with the door open!

Next I rubbed the dresser down well with denatured alcohol and sprayed the dresser with some Rustoleum White Primer I had left from an old project. It helped cover the gold line that was in the drawer fronts and the top of the dresser before I ran out.  I picked up a couple of cans of Rustoleum White Blossom Satin and covered everything twice.  So fresh looking after that old ivory and gold finish.

Looking so much better already!

Dresser Hardware painted

Meanwhile,

I scrubbed the hardware good and spray painted them with a hammered gold color I had.  I didn’t want to spend too much on this little dresser that I wasn’t going to get much for so while that color wasn’t my first choice it looked better than the original!  I’m really into the soft gold color for metals right now and think that would have looked nice on this white dresser also- maybe next time!

I paint the drawers out of the dresser. I like being able to concentrate on the frame of the dresser and make sure all the drawer sides are finished nicely!

I finished the white paint off with 2 coats of Satin Poly.  I wanted to make sure that it had a nice sturdy finish on it that looks great too!

I had some peel and stick wall paper that would look cute with the white dresser!  I don’t even know how I acquired some of these things but I lined the 6 drawer bottoms with it and wiped the rest down with Howard Feed-n-Wax.

The backside-  Hubby had some ¼” plywood in the back shed.  We wiped it down, cut it to fit, and nailed it on. The drawer bars were sagging a bit so we also pushed them up and nailed them to the new back.  I think it will help the drawers slide better!  Wiped the new back with Feed-n-Wax also.

There we have it!  A new to someone white dresser.  Hubby and #1 delivered it to the showroom last Saturday, listed it to Marketplace on Monday morning, and had 5 asking for it before the end of the day…  I don’t know about Marketplace etiquette (is there such a thing?).  I’m still waiting for the first guy to pick it up, he said he was coming in the morning then messaged he’d be back around 1:30.  But the third person could have come yesterday even in the rain.  What’s a mom to do?

White Dresser Price Card

I listed the dresser to Marketplace in the morning by evening I had 5 in line for it! The first person showed up, with cash ;), and its gone. I asked and got $70.
