Espresso Round Table

It was  a Sunday afternoon when I got a text picture from my father in law, yes he knows how to send a pic!

Take a look! It’s no wonder I didn’t let it slip away.

Make it stand out

It was a beautiful, although dirty, round oak table that had ALREADY been sanded!! The hardest part done?!!? Busy mom of three- 4H projects taking up all my project space, vacation just around the corner, County Fair, vacation bible school, swimming lessons- I had NO interest in acquiring a new project I already have a cagillion not getting looked at let alone worked on.  But with my in-laws being persistent I sent my husband to get the table- after all it was ALREADY sanded!

A long month later our trip to South Dakota in the rear view, red ribbons cleared out my work space, and a thousand more miles on the Expedition my son helped me move this beast into the ‘Butcher Shop’ and I got started on it.

O’s red ribbon projects-

He refinished his toy box and made an address sign.   Blue ribbon work if you ask me!

I gave it a once over with 80 grit and 120 grit sandpaper each.  80 grit to get any larger unevenness out and 120 grit to make sure it was good and smooth- no one wants a rough table.    A good scrub down with soap and a little bleach in some warm water.

All scrubbed up - A little nervous, it looked so reddish!

The underneath of the table top got a good rub down with some polish.  Smells of storage in the back shed are gone!  One of the legs needed glued back together as it was splitting- clamped overnight and in great shape again!

It was time to decide on a color. I looked at my inventory of colors and wasn’t too excited about them. The inspiration tables I had been looking at were all dark almost greyish black and I had light or red colors.  I then polled some friends about what color to stain it… I heard DARK all round.

A quick stop in town I picked up Espresso and Ebony.  I did a test spot on a hidden part of each color- Espresso won hands down!  Ebony, despite its name, was fairly light.

I got the base all stained but rumors of the leaves being found I paused on the top in hopes to have the table be whole as I would want to finish them together.  Sadly, the leaves were not the right ones but don’t worry I’ve got ideas for them!

The leg all stained in Espresso

Now the table top and base are all beautifully stained in Minwax Espresso.  The dark and dull stain had me a little worried to be honest it was SO dark, but that first coat of satin poly finish has me loving it all over again!

Next up a satin finish to finish it.  The humidity has me taking my sweet time on it but in no time, I will have 3 coats on the table, and it will be ready to find its new home!

Waiting on the drying to give it a few more coats.

The table originally had wood castors, as most old tables did, the wheels were rubbed flat from being drug around, I suppose, I’ll update you with what I ended up doing!

The table is For Sale-  It’s a round antique oak table 48” round stands 29” tall. $500 for local pick up only.
